Most of the roofs we replace have nothing to do with solar. A leak, a storm, a slope that has lost its granules, or a roof that came with the house and is now out of years. That is ordinary work here and it does not come with a solar conversation attached.

Helio is an Owens Corning Preferred contractor, and the standard shingle is TruDefinition Duration. On a single-family home you own, that carries a lifetime warranty — not a number of years, but for as long as you own the house. Inside it are two ten-year clocks worth knowing about: ten years where the materials are covered non-prorated, and ten years of workmanship coverage, which is the part that pays the labor to tear a failed roof off and dispose of it. Anyone quoting you a single big number that covers labor for decades has merged the two. Gutters and leaf guards are in the same scope when the eaves need them.

An evaluation covers age, ventilation, flashing, decking and structure, and you get a line-item estimate once someone has actually been up there. If the roof has years left, we would rather tell you that than sell you a roof.

If the shingles have less than fifteen years left and an array is in the plan, doing both on one mobilization is almost always cheaper than doing them separately — and it means nobody is paying to take panels off a roof that needed replacing underneath them.

It also keeps the two warranties in one place. The roof is what the array is mounted to, so a roof failure becomes a solar problem; having the same company answer for both is the practical difference. Our warranty terms set out what that covers and what it does not.

One limit worth stating plainly: we roof in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey. In Maryland we install solar, battery storage and electrical — and if the roof needs to come first, we will say so before designing an array, even though the roof is not ours to sell you there.
